An 18-year-old athlete from Mountain Crest High School in Hyrum, Cache County, was in critical condition at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center Friday after being injured Thursday during a 3A basketball playoff game at the Marriott Center.

Kevin Anderson, Mendon, Cache County, fractured two vertebrae in his neck during the final play of the third quarter in a game between Mountain Crest and Pine Valley High School, St. George. Anderson reportedly went up for the ball during an inbounds play and was undercut by another player, causing him to fall.A nursing supervisor at the hospital said Anderson did not suffer any neurological damage because of the injury. He will undergo surgery as soon as his condition stabilizes.
