An 18-year-old athlete from Mountain Crest High School, injured during a 3A basketball playoff game at the Marriott Center on Thursday, has improved from critical to serious condition, according to a spokesman at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.

Kevin Anderson, Mendon, Cache County, fractured two vertebrae in his neck during the final play of the third quarter in a game between Mountain Crest and Pine Valley High School, St. George. Anderson went up for the ball and was run into by other players, causing him to fall.Anderson will undergo surgery to fuse the vertebra together as soon as his condition stabilizes, according to the hospital spokesman. Anderson did not suffer any neurological damage from the injury.
