Unlike the movies, in which police chase bad guys at top speed, a Bellefonte police car never left low gear while an officer tried to get a fugitive to stop. And the fugitive got away.

The police car and the old Allys-Chalmers tractor the fugitive was driving reached a top speed of 15 mph on the more than two-mile pursuit late Thursday. Finally, the driver of the farm tractor pulled onto a field and fled on foot, leaving behind frozen food, generic cigarettes, beer and a chain saw.

"This is definitely high-ranking in bizarreness. It's not often you have that much trouble pulling over a tractor," police dispatcher Eric Naylor said.
