Commercialized child-bearing operations have been put on notice of an intense nationwide effort, backed by Mary Beth Whitehead and other surrogate mothers, to end "the unconscionable act" of breeding women.

The National Coalition Against Surrogacy said Monday that 12 states have clinics that specialize in finding women to have babies for infertile couples and said the attorneys general in those states are being petitioned to close the operations.Petitions are being sent to California, New York, Oregon, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Kentucky, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Washington.
