Chancellor Helmut Kohl's center-right coalition would lose its governing majority if national elections were held now, according to two separate polls published Saturday.

In both polls, Kohl's conservative Christian Democrats and their Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union, lagged behind opposition Social Democrats. One poll gave the Social Democrats and leftist Greens enough votes to form a governing coalition.A poll released by the weekly news magazine Der Spiegel said Kohl's party would receive 38 percent of votes if national elections were held Sunday. The Social Democrats would get 41 percent and the Greens 8 percent.
