The Navajo Supreme Court on Friday issued a writ to prevent Chairman Peter MacDonald's brother-in-law from hearing a case involving MacDonald's suspension as the tribe's top executive.

The writ ordered Navajo District Judge Harry Brown to abandon a hearing scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and to report before the tribe's highest tribunal Tuesday for a show-cause hearing to determine why he should not be enjoined from hearing the case. The action stemmed from a Feb. 17 action by the Tribal Council, which voted 49-13 to place MacDonald and Vice Chairman Johnny R. Thompson on administrative leave. The bulk of the council's winter meeting, which began Feb. 14, has been taken up with the question of MacDonald's fitness to serve in the wake of corruption and bribery claims
