The Utah Transportation Department has closed U-68 on the west side of Utah Lake to heavy trucks and other oversized vehicles, due to road base problems.

"Melting snow and ground thaw have reduced the stability of the highway's subsurface to the point that it cannot handle heavy loads without sustaining severe damage," department spokeswoman Shirley Iverson said Wednesday. The closure is from the junction with U-73 west of Lehi to the Elberta area on the lake's southwest corner, a stretch of about 25 miles. Vehicles with a weight of 7 tons per axle or more are banned from that portion of U-68.

"The weight restriction has been placed to protect the pavement from further damage," Iverson said, "and will remain in effect until the ground can dry out and regain stability."
