Senate and House members can't decide on how much to raise the pay Utah's top judges - 9.5 percent or 12.5 percent.

Senators approved a bill that would raise Supreme Court justices' pay from $64,000 to $72,000. House Republicans want the raise to go to $70,000. A salary commission recommended the raise be $80,000. District Court, Circuit Court and Juvenile Court judges' salaries are based on Supreme Court justices' salaries, so they would get the same percentage increase.Sen. LeRay McAllister, R-Provo, said a study of seven surrounding states found the average pay for a Supreme Court justice is $66,900. "Let's not go well above the average - $70,000 is reasonable," he said. Now the matter will be fought out between the two houses.
