A special award for outstanding contributions to the Exploring program of the Boy Scouts of America will go this year to Elder Vaughn J. Featherstone of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and to the Veterans Administration Medical Center.

The William H. Spurgeon III Award will be presented during the Silver Beaver recognition program at the Capitol Theatre Thursday night.Elder Featherstone, of the church's First Quorum of the Seventy, is chairman of the General Scouting Committee and general president of Young Men for the church.

He is also a member of the National BSA Executive Board and a member of the National BSA Religious Relationships Committee and Camping Committee.

He has been an Explorer adviser and has received the Silver Beaver, Silver Antelope and Silver Buffalo awards. As a young man he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, and he later served as a Scoutmaster.

The VA Medical Center is being honored for its sponsorship since 1975 of a Medical Explorer Post. Scouting officials proposed the post to hospital officials in late 1973 and found ready support.

Since its inception, members of Medical Explorer Post 9061 have learned about such medical specialties as X-ray, nuclear medicine, anesthesiology, hemodialysis, ultrasound and animal labs.

The Explorers have worked on various service projects, maintaining first-aid stations, helping at the Festival of Trees and doing volunteer work at community hospitals.
