Jury selection is under way in the trial of James Gary Sheets, accused of 34 felony counts of fraud and other crimes.
Prosecutors claim Sheets bilked 75 investors in Utah, Nevada, Idaho and Montana of $1.8 million.Sheets is a former investments consultant who was an associate of the murderer and forger Mark W. Hofmann. Soon after Hofmann killed Sheet's wife, Kathleen, in 1985, Sheets' investments empire collapsed.
Hofmann also confessed to killing Sheets' former business partner, Steven F. Christensen. He is serving a life sentence for the murders and forgery.
Jurors filled out a lengthy questionnaire Friday in the courtroom of U.S. District Judge David Sam. They will return Tuesday for questioning on their qualifications. The trial will begin as soon as a jury is impaneled, probably by Thursday.
