The Utah Department of Social Services was one of 19 organizations to receive a federal grant from Human Development Services for social service research and demonstration projects to strengthen and improve the lives of families, youths, Native Americans and American Samoans.

The $56,208 grant will increase by 10 percent the number of recipients of Aid to Families with Dependent Children (welfare) with earned income, and decrease by 5 percent the number who do not participate in an earned income program."These grants are targeted at the prevention of alcohol and drug abuse among families, youths and minorities, management improvement, increased training and technical assistance and to increase community support in research and positive program outcomes," said Sydney Olson, assistant secretary for Human Development Services in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
