A Canadian police officer involved in an anti-narcotics operation was killed when he was thrown from a speeding car carrying fleeing drug suspects in northern Thailand, officials said Tuesday.

Cpl. Derek John Flanagan, 35, an anti-narcotics agent for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Vancouver, British Columbia, fell off a speeding car during an attempted arrest Sunday, said George Manerd, a spokesman for the Canadian Embassy in Bangkok.Manerd said Flanagan struck the cement pavement and suffered serious head injuries. He said the Canadian policeman was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead Monday afternoon.
