A fire in the southeastern city of Mergui destroyed 3,900 buildings and left 22,000 residents homeless, official sources said Friday.

There was no report on casualties or the cause of Thursday's inferno, which sources said caused an estimated $50 million damage.Among the structures destroyed were two schools, three movie theaters, a section of a hospital and a government office building.

Mergui, 350 miles southeast of Rangoon, is a prosperous business center with a wealthy Chinese-Burmese community.

Several large fires have swept through Burma's provincial centers in recent years, in part because many buildings are wooden.
