A Layton man charged with rape of a child, a first-degree felony that carries a minimum mandatory prison term of 5, 10, or 15 years, Tuesday pleaded guilty in 2nd District Court to a lesser charge of sexual abuse of a child.

Paul E. Hawkins, 51, of 101 E. Mill Road., Layton, pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a 9-year-old girl on Aug. 2, 1988, while returning with her from a fishing trip.Hawkins was charged with rape of a child, a first-degree felony that carries a prison term of five years to life and the minimum mandatory prison time. Sexual abuse of a child is a second-degree felony, carrying a one-to-15-year prison term.

Judge Douglas L Cornaby scheduled Hawkins sentencing for March 21.
