Second District Judge David Roth has been assigned to preside over a March 2 hearing to determine when and where accused child-killer Steven Ray James will be tried, 1st District Court officials said Friday.

Last month, the Utah Supreme Court granted James a change of venue, allowing the trial to be moved out of Cache Valley. Defense attorneys had challenged a ruling that James should be tried in Logan. The case then was turned over to Roth after both 1st District judges removed themselves from the proceedings. James is charged with first-degree murder in the August 1986 slaying of his 3-month-old son, Steven Roy James.

The father reported the infant was abducted Aug. 25, 1986. The boy's body was found by duck hunters Oct. 11, 1986, in a Bear River marsh. Two weeks later, the suspect was charged in the slaying.
