Freshman Per Karlsson from Sweden threw the 35-pound weight a personal best 66 feet, 4 inches Saturday in helping Brigham Young win its BYU Invitational Indoor Track and Field Meet.
Karlsson's winning throw was 1 foot and 71/2 inches longer than his previous best.The Cougars won eight of the individual events to finish first in the team standings with 109 points. Utah was second with 44 points, followed by Weber State 36 and Utah State 30.
The other BYU winners were Eric Akogyiram in the 55-meter dash, Sowah Marley in the 55-meter hurdles, George Scherer in the 200-meter sprint, Dave Chipman in the 3,000-meter run, Russ Muir in the mile and Ron Shalvis in the pole vault. BYU also won the 400-meter team relay.
Utah State had three individual firsts. Jeff Hancock won the 800-meter run, Erin Sullivan the triple jump and Craig Carter the shot put.
Utah won two events, with Jack Clark and Eric Wheelwright each clearing 6-11 in the high jump and Troy Jones taking the long jump. Weber State's Scott captured the 400-meter run.
