Andrei Sakharov, Soviet dissident and Nobel Peace Prize winner, will address the 1990 Peace Prize Forum at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, it was announced Saturday.
Former Vice President Walter Mondale made the announcement while addressing the concluding session of 1989 forum at St. Olaf College.Mondale said he invited Sakharov to the forum Feb. 16-17, 1990, and that he was notified of his acceptance by the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. Sakharov's wife, Yelena Bonner, also will attend.
"For over 30 years Dr. Sakharov has led the struggle for human rights in the Soviet Union," Mondale said. "Through his outspoken opinions, his thoughtful writings and his tireless spirit, he is an inspiration for all who champion the cause of human rights.
