A Soviet ballet instructor smashed his head through a glass window and jumped to his death from an apartment building one day after his arrival in the United States, police said Friday.

Boris Sinitsyn, 55, apparently committed suicide Thursday morning by jumping from the 35th story of the Galaxy Towers complex, said Capt. Victor Conversano.Paul M. DePascale, the Hudson County prosecutor, said the death was "clearly a suicide," but that it was not known why Sinitsyn wanted to take his life.

Sinitsyn's wife, Mina, 69, who is also a ballet instructor, attempted to stop him by grabbing his legs, but he slipped from her grasp.

Sinitsyn, a resident of the Soviet town of Aztinovisch, arrived with his wife Wednesday to visit a stepdaughter and other relatives living in the apartment complex.
