About 5,000 people, including barmaids and soldiers, marched to a rally outside a U.S. air base Saturday to try to drown out a concert sponsored by opponents of U.S. military bases in the Philippines.
Authorities reported no violence. But they said the U.S.-run Clark Air Base closed its main gate while the two groups held rival events within a few hundred yards of each other at a park nearby. The anti-base concert featured dance and vocal performances with no speeches. City authorities earlier withdrew a permit they gave the group, but they later reissued it under pressure from members of the Senate.
Many senators have criticized the presence of the bases on Philippine territory and pressed President Corazon Aquino to demand they be removed.
