Eight famous paintings by artists including Gauguin, Renoir, Monet and Cezanne will go on the auction block in May and are expected to fetch more than $50 million, Sotheby's auction house announced.

The works were described by Sotheby's North America Chairman John L. Marion as "one of the finest groups of impressionist and post-impressionist works ever to be offered for sale."The most valuable work in the group is Paul Gauguin's "Mata Mua," or "In Olden Times," which the artist painted during his first trip to Tahiti in 1892. Sotheby's said Wednesday it should sell for between $20 million and $25 million.
