More than 100 political prisoners in Johannesburg's maximum security prison suspended a hunger strike Thursday on the assumption the government has agreed to either try or release them, attorneys said.

The hunger strike began Jan. 23 over the prolonged detention of activists without charge under emergency regulations. It eventually involved as many as 300 prisoners at four prisons across the country and sympathy strikes among church and community leaders. The Detainees Aid Center said at least 18 of the hunger strikers have been hospitalized.
