Alice Popham takes her listeners on armchair journeys twice a week at the Reading Room for the Blind, where, for more than nine years, she has spent 10 hours a month reading.

"She has assumed this task with cheerfulness and a good attitude," said Bernice Eisen, supervisor of the Reading Room. "And she is always humble."In addition to the time she gives the Reading Room, Popham has been a teacher's aide at both the Sumner School and the Dilworth School for two years. She has also been a volunteer reader three times a week in the home of an elderly woman. But never on Sunday.

That's the day she fills in if she's needed as a gift shop attendant at St. Mark's Hospital, a job she has performed for three years.
