The U.S. Labor Department helped 3,553 Utah workers collect $1,154,135 in back wages and overtime during fiscal year 1988, the agency's Employment Standards Administration says.
The repayments resulted from Labor Department enforcement actions against 371 Utah employers, said Joe Garcia, administration regional administrator."The findings are a direct result of the department's continuing commitment to protect workers at the low end of the wage scale," said Garcia. The Fair Labor Standards Act protects low-wage workers from becoming victims of substandard wages and working conditions and protects the majority of employers from unfair competition by a small minority."
Additional cases against Utah employers "are currently in litigation," Garcia said.
