A transient who is accused of assaulting an 89-year-old hotel clerk with a sofa was being held Wednesday in the Salt Lake County jail.
The 28-year-old man was booked for investigation of aggravated assault and felony criminal mischief. Salt Lake police responded to the Se Rancho Motel, 640 W. North Temple.Officers found the man throwing a stuffed chair, end tables, a cash register and other furnishings at the elderly clerk, police reports said. The victim said the transient, wearing long johns and a coat, entered the lobby carrying a fifth of vodka and saying somebody was dying.
The man then began throwing things when the clerk could not get paramedics on the phone.
The clerk was not injured in the Monday night incident, the reports said.
