A 14-year-old boy who pulled a gun in his Rigby Junior High School class last week and took another student hostage will undergo psychiatric evaluations, officials said Tuesday.
The youth drew a loaded and cocked .22-caliber revolver Feb. 8, threatened his teacher and two students before taking a 14-year-old girl hostage. He held the girl at gunpoint for about one hour before law enforcement officials found him at a church in Rigby and were able to safely get the girl and gun away from him.
Robin Dunn, Jefferson County prosecutor, said the diagnostic analysis probably will be done in northern Idaho. The boy has been held at the regional juvenile detention center in St. Anthony since the incident.
Dunn said it will take at least 30 days before the evaluations are completed and at that time a judge will decide whether the boy should be tried as an adult.
He faces one count of kidnapping, two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of aggravated assault on a police officer.
No shots were fired and no one was injured in the incident. Officers said the boy brought the gun from home.
