Oklahoma basketball coach Billy Tubbs was reprimanded by the Big Eight Conference Monday for his comments to the crowd about officiating at last week's game with Missouri.
Big Eight Conference Commissioner Carl James said Oklahoma athletic department officials advised Tubbs that he violated league rules.Missouri led early during the game at Oklahoma, which may have intensified Tubbs' usual comments directed at referees. Tubbs disputed a call four minutes into the game and received a technical foul. Shortly afterward, Tubbs argued again and the Sooners' fans responded by pelting the court with cups and ice.
The officials asked Tubbs to calm the crowd. The Oklahoma coach picked up the public address microphone and said: "The referees request that regardless of how terrible the officiating is, do not throw stuff on the floor."
The unorthodox approach did stop the throwing of debris. However, referee Jim Bain gave Tubbs a second technical.
