Many southern Utah residents who suffered property damage from the New Year's Day Quail Creek Reservoir dike break will get insurance settlements this week, officials say.

Transamerica Insurance Co. of San Francisco will be in St. George through Thursday to begin payments of some $1 million in claims. The earthen dike failed just minutes after midnight Jan. 1.

As of Monday, there had been 102 damage claims filed against the Washington County Water Conservancy District. Transamerica is the district's underwriter.

Once a value is placed on a disaster victim's losses, a check will be paid on the spot, Transamerica officials say.

Meantime, the Federal Emergency Management Agency has an office set up in the county administration building through Friday.

Although President Bush's disaster declaration allows no federal money to be spent on private property repairs, FEMA officials are assisting disaster victims in filing claims.
