Gibbons & Reed Co. of Salt Lake City is the apparent low bidder on the controversial Skier Connect highway project in Sandy.

The Utah Department of Transportation plans to build a new highway to connect 90th South at Seventh East with 94th South at 1140 East.Owners of businesses at 94th South and Seventh East have opposed the project, saying it will divert customers from their busy commercial intersection.

Gibbons & Reed's bid of $847,576 was below the official engineer's estimate of $1,009,641. The contract won't be awarded until the bids are reviewed to make sure no errors were made and all requirements were met, however.

The new highway, which UDOT says will provide more direct, safer access from I-15 to the canyon areas, will be two lanes wide with enough right of way to add two more lanes later.

Work on the 31/2-month job is expected to start in early spring.
