Berkley A. Spencer has been named chairman of International Development Studies at Brigham Young University, according to Provost and Academic Vice President Jae R. Ballif.

Spencer has been an associate professor in the department of sociology at BYU since 1969. During that time, he also served as a mission president for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Chile from 1976 to 1979, as an area director of the Church Educational System for Central America, and as director of training at the Missionary Training Center in Provo.An honors graduate, Spencer received his master's degree in Spanish literature from BYU and his doctorate in rural sociology from Cornell University.

Spencer is the author of several publications, with specialties in the areas of anthropology and Latin American studies.
