A Palo Alto, Calif., family making a ski trip to Utah had nearly $19,000 worth of bad luck, police said.

The family arrived Saturday night at the airport, rented a van, loaded it with ski equipment and luggage and headed for the mountains. But while they stopped to eat at a Salt Lake restaurant, thieves broke into the van and took ski gear, clothing, cameras and cash."We weren't even in town two hours," said one family member. "They got away with quite a bit of stuff. I didn't realize we carry around that much."

The family is continuing its vacation at Snowbird, but the incident has understandably put a "major damper" on their trip.

"I've got a real bad taste about coming into Salt Lake now," the family member said but added that the burglary will probably not prevent them from returning to ski in Utah.
