Tracy Leonard, 3, Payson, Utah, who underwent heart transplant surgery Saturday morning at Loma Linda University Medical Center, was in critical but stable condition Sunday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Anita Rockwell said early Monday the youngster had been taken off a respirator and was breathing on his own.She said she would probably not receive an updated condition report from the hospital's transplant coordinator until Monday afternoon.

Tracy, son of Chad and Judy Leonard, was born with a heart on the right side of his chest and without a spleen.

Because Tracy doesn't have a spleen, doctors were concerned that he couldn't survive a post-surgery infection. Doctors considered a heart and spleen transplant. But the operation Saturday was only a heart transplant.
