Political violence apparently aimed at derailing this week's parliamentary polling left at least 43 people dead on Sunday, including 20 children and 20 adults of the ethnic Sinhalese majority butchered by rebels of the Tamil minority, officials said.

The deaths brought to at least 64 the number of slayings over the weekend attributed by authorities to Tamil guerrillas of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam or Sinhalese reb-els of the leftist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna or Peoples Liberation Front.A senior military official said an unknown number of LTTE militants wielding knives and guns staged a pre-dawn attack on the sleeping Sinhalese farming hamlet of Dutuvewa, about 110 miles northeast of Colombo.
