Iran on Tuesday will hang 70 people convicted of drug trafficking, the Islamic Republic News Agency reported.
The previous record for drug-related executions was 56 people hanged on Jan. 16.Iran instituted harsh drug laws on Jan. 21 mandating death for anyone found with more than an ounce of heroin or more than 11 pounds of opium or hashish.
Up to 1 million of Iran's 47 million people are drug addicts.
In a related statement, police in Tehran announced Monday they have arrested 3,300 drug traffickers since 1987. During the same period, police said they seized 10.78 tons of opium, 1,540 pounds of heroin and 2.25 tons of hashish.
