An 18-year-old Mexican migrant worker has died of rabies, probably caused by a bat bite, a rarity last reported in Oregon a decade ago, authorities said Friday.

Dr. Larry Foster, state health officer, said the source of the rabies that killed the young man last week is not known, but he said it was probably a bat, "the only animal species in Oregon known to have rabies."Public health laws prevent the release of identifying information about the victim, who was from an area of Mexico that has had rabies in dogs but who had not been home for 10 months, Foster said.
