The art of rock climbing, compared to gymnastics and martial arts, is the subject of two short films presented by the Utah Media Arts Center Friday and Saturday. They will show at 8 p.m. in the Salt Lake Art Center auditorium; admission is $4.

"On the Rocks" is an award-winning documentary surveying the sport of "rock gymnastics," including interviews with famed climbers John Gill, Warren Harding, Jim Erickson and Bill Price. The interviews are rather routinely shot, but the scenes of the climbers doing their thing are often astonishing as they jam their hands in the cracks of steep mountainsides and swing their legs a bit higher in the climb. In addition, "Over the Edge" will be shown, a narrative film about the exploits of two climbers over several days of climbing a big wall in Yosemite.

The films are by Kathryn Johnston and Iain Stobie, who will be present to introduce the films and take questions afterward.

The films are co-sponsored by the Media Center and Wasatch Touring. Each month a new program will be presented. "River's Song," a documentary about the Colorado River, will be shown March 3 and 4. For further information phone 534-1158.
