Former baseball star Steve Garvey was all set to get married when he made a last-minute change in the lineup and brought in a new fiancee.

Garvey, a former Los Angeles Dodger and San Diego Padre who is said to be gearing up for a career in Republican politics, had proposed to Rebecca Mendenhall, 33, an editor for Cable News Network, over the Christmas holidays, but three weeks later they had broken up.The once-divorced Garvey quickly took up with Los Angeles decorator Candace Thomas, 30, and she was his date for George Bush's inauguration. The proposal came Jan. 22 and Garvey told the San Diego Tribune that he and Thomas "just felt there was a certain destiny and a certain redefinition of the word `love' that we experienced with each other."

The couple are planning a spring wedding in San Diego.
