The head of the Navajo Tribal Police Department now is reporting directly to the chairman's office instead of to the director of the tribe's Public Safety Division.

Tribal press secretary Tazbah McCullah said Monday that the change was made last week to tighten up the chain of command and give the police more direct access to the chairman's office.Other tribal officials, however, blamed the switch on an inability of Marshall Tome, who was appointed public safety director two months ago, to get along with members of the public safety committee.
