A would-be robber who was doused with gasoline in a filling station holdup was engulfed in a fireball that erupted in the getaway car, police said Saturday.

The man suffered burns over 80 percent of his body and was listed in critical condition at the burn unit of New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan, police spokesman Maurice Howard said. The driver of the getaway car, his clothing also in flames, was seen running from the Friday night explosion, Howard said. "The driver got away on foot, but we expect to find him with burns," he said.
