Nearly 1,000 ultra-leftist radicals shouting slogans against the monarchy marched through downtown Tokyo on Saturday, and five were arrested for obstructing police, officials said.

A Metropolitan Police Department official said several scuffles broke out during the demonstration, but there were no reports of serious injuries.The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said 940 radicals participated in the march.

Chanting "Fight the emperor!" and "The final battle!" the radicals were surrounded by plainclothes police and riot control personnel wearing helmets and carrying metal shields.
