A 17-year-old girl and her newborn infant were found living with farm animals in a run-down, abandoned house, state social workers said.
"There were animals in the house, sheep and dogs," said prosecutor Richard Garcia, who represents the Texas Department of Human Services in child welfare cases. "The baby had a severe case of diaper rash. The mother was dirty and lice-infested."Garcia said the infant was taken to a children's shelter after DHS officials obtained emergency custody of the baby a week ago. On Thursday, District Judge Tom Rickhoff gave DHS officials six months' custody of the baby and ordered the mother to undergo evaluation.
"This was a 5-day-old baby and they had no place to live, no food, no heat, no water, no nothing," Garcia said after the hearing.
