Forces loyal to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein foiled an attempted coup in Baghdad in early January, and 200 people said to have been implicated were executed, Turkey's semi-official Anatolia News Agency said Wednesday. In a dispatch from Baghdad, the Turkish news agency said officers of the Republican Guard and two military units based in northern Iraq were reported to have been involved. It was the first reported coup attempt in Iraq since the Aug. 20 Iran-Iraq cease-fire. The reported timing of the rebellion would coincide with Hussein's postponement, without giving any reasons, of the military celebrations that had been scheduled for Army Day Jan. 6.
