Quoting President Bush's inaugural address, Salt Lake Mayor Palmer DePaulis said Tuesday in his State of the City address the city is poised to write a new chapter in 1989, redefining itself for the future.

"And so today a chapter begins . . . shared and written together," he said, quoting Bush, whose inauguration DePaulis attended last month.DePaulis, giving the traditional address before the City Council, said 1989 marks not only a new chapter for the nation, "it also marks a new chapter for our city. And it will be a story `shared and written' by all of us."

The mayor focused on Salt Lake City's recent accomplishments and his aim to polish the city's image in 1989.

"Too often in the past, we have let others define us. The definition has not always been flattering, nor has it always been accurate," DePaulis said.

"My message, therefore, focuses on the chapter we want to write for our community . . . if we do not purposefully set out to write our own chapter, someone else will surely write it for us," he said.

DePaulis pointed to a number of achievements in the city he would like to "build upon" this year, including the Employment Security Building and other buildings proposed for construction downtown.

"We have made much progress in the past 12 months. The question is, where do we go from here? How do we begin the chapter for 1989?" he said.

Defining three areas of focus for the next year - education, the arts and athletics - DePaulis said, "Let us focus on and work to enhance those areas that make our community what it is."

On education, DePaulis said, "The city has a role with respect to education. It can act as a liaison between education and the corporate world, helping the private sector find ways to aid our schools."

DePaulis also said the arts play "a very fulfilling role" in the city. Musical and cultural events and the City County Building, now under renovation, "send powerful messages to the people outside our community."

Finally, athletic events such as Utah Jazz basketball games and the U.S. Olympic Gymnastic Trials held here last year as well as Utah Olympians and other athletes "give our city definition," the mayor said.

When we set about scripting the definition of our city, we cannot ignore the serious and very fulfilling role the arts play."> - Athletics.
