Citizens Committee to Save Our Canyons, an environmental group, wants Salt Lake County to help monitor storm runoff water quality in Big and Little Cottonwood canyons.

In a press conference Monday, the group released copies of a letter to the County Commission requesting the commission provide $13,000 to fund a monitoring project requested by the City-County Board of Health. It would be added to $5,000 that the Salt Lake City Public Utilities Department has promised.A group spokesman said that while water quality is checked daily at the water treatment plants, this may miss the high levels of pollution like oil and grease that might wash down during storms.
