The City Council rebuffed angry gun owners Tuesday and voted unanimously to ban the possession and sale of military-style weapons, including the AK-47 assault rifle and Uzi submachine gun favored by many gang members.

Mayor Tom Bradley immediately signed the ordinance, approved by a 12-0 vote of the council.The law bans the sale of military-style weapons starting Wednesday and gives gun owners not more than 15 days to hand the weapons over to police or make mechanical changes to render them permanently inoperable. The ordinance carries a maximum penalty of six months in county jail and a $1,000 fine.
