Rep. Wayne Owens, D-Utah, will meet with Palestine Liberation Organization leader Yasser Arafat Friday, his office announced Wednesday. Owens will meet in a one-on-one meeting with Arafat as part of his assignment on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said Art Kingdom, Owen's press secretary. Owens missed a meeting with Arafat several weeks ago when he was touring the Middle East. At that time, U.S. policy did not allow government officials to talk with PLO officials. Kingdom said Owens was offered the chance to meet with Arafat largely because of that missed opportunity. Owens will be the first congressman to meet with Arafat in two years, Kingdom said. Rep. Lee Hamilton, D-Indiana, was the last congressman to meet with Arafat. Owens will leave for Tunisia Thursday night and arrive there Friday.
