Guards shot at rioting Palestinian inmates of an Israeli military prison Wednesday, killing one prisoner and wounding at least 14 others, the army said. Three other Palestinians died from army gunfire in the occupied territories.

The violence flared a day after the United States accused Israel's armed forces of widespread human rights violations in the Palestinian uprising in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. The rioting at Megiddo military prison, 60 miles north of Jerusalem, erupted when the head of the detention center temporarily prevented Palestinian inmates from meeting with visiting relatives who began waving outlawed PLO flags and vandalizing cars of reserve duty soldiers, an army statement said.

"The detainees returned to their cells after the visit and began inciting others to riot," the statement said. "As a result a serious riot broke out inside the cells."
