Soviet human-rights advocate Andrei Sakharov, left, and his wife, Elena Bonner, meet with Pope John Paul II in the Vatican, five years after the pope appealed to Moscow to free the Nobel Prize-winning physicist from internal exile. Bonner and Sakharov, on his second visit to the West since Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev lifted restrictions on his travel, were received Monday by the pontiff in the papal study overlooking St. Peter's Square in Vatican City. Vatican sources described the meeting as "very cordial."
