Retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Lewis F. Powell Jr. was resting comfortably in a hospital after being admitted for an acute respiratory infection.

"He has a relatively minor illness that has lingered for a few days, an acute respiratory infection - a cold, really," said Dr. Joel P. Schrank, chief of cardiology at Baptist Medical Center.Powell, 81, was listed in stable condition early Tuesday, said Cindy Hamilton, a hospital spokeswoman.
