Sen. Jake Garn is still the most popular politician in Utah. He's followed - in order of job approval - by Sen. Orrin Hatch and Reps. Jim Hansen, Wayne Owens and Howard Nielson, the latest Deseret News/KSL-TV poll shows.

Seventy-four percent approve of the job Garn is doing, 18 percent disapprove and 7 percent don't know. In January 1988 Garn hit an all-time high job approval rating with 82 percent liking what he was doing as senator.

Hatch has never been as popular as Garn, although the junior senator's job performance rating has improved since he first took office.

Sixty-nine percent strongly or somewhat approve of job Hatch is doing, 24 percent disapprove and 7 percent don't know. Last year, 71 percent approved of Hatch's job performance.

Owens and Hansen each received 65 percent approval ratings from their constituents, Jones found. Twenty-two percent disapprove of the job Owens is doing representing the 2nd District and 13 percent don't know.

Seventeen percent of 1st District constituents disapprove of Hansen's job as their representative and 18 percent don't know what kind of job he's doing.

Nielson gets the lowest job approval rating, 52 percent. Sixteen percent disapprove of the job he's doing and 32 percent said they don't know enough about what Nielson is doing to have an opinion.

Hansen's job approval rating is up from a year ago, Owens is down slightly and Nielson's is down also.
