An eight-member military court jury found a second Marine sergeant guilty late Monday of negligence in the death of a 19-year-old Marine who was accidentally abandoned in the California desert last summer.

After nearly three hours of deliberation, the panel found Sgt. Thomas Turnell of Washington, Pa., guilty of negligence but acquitted him on a more serious charge of failure to obey a lawful order. He was also acquitted of charges of taking unauthorized leave. The military judge ordered Turnell demoted to lance corporal.

Turnell was charged with negligence as a squad leader in leaving Cpl. Jason Rother in the desert and not going back after him.
